Questions - Jämthund on driven moose?
Hi
I have a few questions for the hunters that use Jämthund to drive moose. How many dogs do you tend to run at the same time? how far do the dogs tend to travel on a drive? Is there much problem with the dogs chasing the wrong prey animals - I mean if you are hunting for moose, but there is some other species in the area, is the dog likely to start driving a species you are not hunting? I watch a lot of the hunting videos on youtube, but they are rarely in English, so I get very little of the details that get described.
Thanks!

Jämthund (and the other similar breeds) are meant not to drive but to find the moose and by barking making the moose stop, and meanwhile the hunter might be able to sneak up from the right wind conditions and make a shot. This can tanke hours and a good dog make the moose stay long enough. But often the moose runs away with the dog following and hopefully it comes to a stop again, or passes a stand where a hunting teammate can get a clean shot.
You run only one dog at the time, not in packs, but if your hunting team has a larger hunting area you can run other dogs in another spot.
A dog can run for 40+ kilometers in a day but that varies a lot between breeds and individuals. Especially younger dogs can run after roe deer for a couple of 100 m but that also tends to vary a lot, the best is of course that the dogs always go for moose.

Re: Questions - Jämthund on driven moose?
Great information. Thanks. So that would explain why some videos look like there is just one hunter out with a dog, and other times there is a team of hunters out. The team looked like a drive to me, but from whet you are saying thats not really the case, Its more a matter of putting hunters where the dog might be moving with the animal if it doesnt stop? What we would call a "walking bail" I think.PeterC skrev: Hi!

Re: Questions - Jämthund on driven moose?
Yes. The main objective for the dog is to find and stop the moose and work while barking to make the moose stand it's ground. The dog has to be very confident in it self both in serching and standing the moose, it's not an easy task. The barking hide the sound of the hunter sneaking in on the stand to make a shot. It's the ultimate bond between hunter and dog, its the dogs job to find and bark moose on the spot so the hunter can sneak in to make the shot. In my and most of the dogkeepers opinion it's a failure if the dog drives the animal. One man and his dog alone in the forest is how i like to hunt.Rifletuner skrev:Great information. Thanks. Thanks Kungibyn
Thats more useful detail. Can you give me some insight into training the jämthund to hunt moose? Is it difficult to train them to hunt specific species? I am assuming a jämthund starts to come into their best after 2-3 years? At least that seems to be the case with other dog breeds from good hunting lines?

Re: Questions - Jämthund on driven moose?
The intrest for moose should be pre programmed and how the dog should work with the animal to make it stop and remain on The place. Youre never gonna be able to teach The dog that, you can enforce it by scent train with piece of moose skin and stuff like that when its a puppy.Rifletuner skrev:Thanks Kungibyn

The way these dogs hunt is far from the man on search rounds to find moose thats not spooked in any way, The dog must be undependet but still have contact and check his keeper regulary.
Its gonna hunt bird, fox, hare, reindeer etc when its young but that behavior should grow away.
Don't shoot moose that doesnt stand still, especially to a young dog.
A lot of time in the forrest is important when its a young dog, i dont hunt for real with my dog until its 1year old. Encourage The dog to search out and wait for it to come back, dont pick it upp with car because you dont have time to wait.

Re: Questions - Jämthund on driven moose?
We also use the jämthund to hunt for wildboars, bear and badger beside moose. All of these animals often stops and stand still for the dog.
Jämthund don't bark when the animals is running and will try to get it to stop.

Re: Questions - Jämthund on driven moose?
I have hunted for Sambar in Vic back in 2001 and since it’s so long ago I can admit we did it by spotlighting from a ute
I will not name my Aussie mates that set up the hunt but we had a blast and shot a few deer witch we brought home and cooked some outstanding meals on, great tucker! Not hunting in my opinion but I didn’t put up a fuzz when I was the guest and my mates put in some time and effort.
I have a strong feeling that the Swedish breeds we use for moose doesn’t work well on Sambar..... The idea with moose dogs is to get the moose to stay and bot run, lots of moose get shot by hunters in stands when the run past though. Most of the moosehunting here is in teams of hunters from 3-4 up to 50 hunters. Moose have good hearing, nose and decent vision. When a moosehunt is done moose are often spooked by hunters in one or the other way before the dogs get hold of them and this usually results in a run for quite some while
I suspect Sambar may behave like Red deer and the best dogs for deer here is smaller dogs like Beagles and smaller that pursuit the game pretty slow and barks! This makes the deer not to nervous when they can hear the (slow) dog and feel that they don’t need to make a “mad rush” to outrun the dog! This result in deer trotting in circles (when undisturbed) and gives the hunters an exiting hunt.

Re: Questions - Jämthund on driven moose?
Hi Stefan
Yes, I remember your trip in 2001. Thats the first time I met you. I legally shoot sambar on privately owned land to control problem deer. Its a grate way to get meat, although I agree with you that its not hunting. Sambar is great eating - we pretty much eat nothing else when the freezer is full.
I have heard of a couple of people in Australia hunting sambar with Elkhounds, though I dont know anyone personally who has actually done this. Beagles are used a lot for hunting sambar. I did talk with someone here who had hunted a lot of sambar with beagles and has also hunted moose in Sweden with elkhounds. He thought that elkhounds could be effective on sambar. But it is definitely a risk to try it for a few reasons.
1) just getting good hunting animals here, because the elkhound is fairly rare in Australia and mostly used as a show dog. Ideally I would like to buy a dog from a breeder that has produced multiple generations of successful hunting dogs. But there is no one in the country that has done that with elkhounds.
2) as you say, they may not be suitable to hunt sambar. Its a big commitment to the bread and it may not work.
3) I do have concerns about the dog covering a lot of ground after deer. Our deer county can be very rugged and difficult to move through. So chasing a dog for many kilometers is not physically possible.
But having said all that, I am going to keep doing research and in particular I would like to try to find some of the people over hear that have actually hunted sambar with the breed.

Re: Questions - Jämthund on driven moose?
So we have met!?
The usual breeds of moose dogs here doesn’t handle heat well....... We usually have temps around 10-15 C the first weeks of the seson and many dogs wear out pretty fast if the temp go up above that! We also have plenty of water for the dogs to drink during a hunt in most areas! I suppose you struggle to get a day under 20 and water is scarce in many areas.

Re: Questions - Jämthund on driven moose?
Our hound season for sambar runs from April to November, and during that time we get temperatures which can get to a high of 28-29C in the warmer months, to lows of -5C in the cooler months. For most of the time we hunt in the 5C to 15C temperature range. In the warmer weather at the start and end of the season, we only hunt at the start of the day for a few hours before the day gets too hot for the dogs. Also in the warmer months the snakes are too active, so there is too much risk to the dogs.Stefan.K skrev:
