En släkting köpte denna Husqvarna 310AS ny 1939 och för ett tag sedan övertog jag den.

Vad kan ett tänkbart försäkringsvärde på den vara?

Hello, sorry but I don't speak Swedish - I hope English is ok.

A friend of mine recently showed me an old short barreled Husqvarna shotgun, which got me interested. It's a wall hanger, he has no interest in shooting it, although to my untrained eye it looks quite ok (though the lugs are worn, for sure). I took some notes. But not pictures, I didn't get to that - I can ask him for those, if anyone is interested.

It's a 20, 'senare' model I guess, although there's no 'S' - the serial number is 79136 though. This number is stamped on the Lefaucheux action, as well as on the right barrel.

The curious thing is that the shotgun is of the 'coach gun' style. The barrels are short, 51,5 cm +/-, yet don't seem to have been sawed off as they are choked (differently left/right), and i did not see tool marks on the muzzles.

I looked up everything I could online, including Tobias Hassel's quite excellent site.

Markings on the gun:

On the barrels:

'20' (left)
factory mark, but it looked liked damaged or not very well stamped in (left)
'79136' (right)
'sandvik husqvarna' (right)

On and between the lugs:
'6' or '9' (on the front lug, front meaning the closest to the muzzle)
'8' (next to the front lug)
'AE'

On the action:

'20'
'AE'
'79136'

If anyone could provide this gun/history nerd with some info about this gun, it would be most appreciated. Feel free to answer in Swedish - I understand it a (very) little bit and can use auto-translate.

Thanks in advance!

No one? I'm trying to have my post translated to Swedish, need to find someone willing to do it though.

I got some pictures, too:

IMG_20220706_190420r.jpg

The gun is really dirty and should be cleaned, it hurts my eyes... He just bought the thing, oiled it a bit, and that was it.

I dont think English is the problem. Its more summer and vacation time and there are only a few persons here who knows these guns well enough to help you. Most users here are hunters and are not "glued" to their phones/computers like gamers. Give it a few days and you will get answers.

Hi norbertus,
And very welcome to the forum! I just read your post and looked in the swedish publication "Husqvarna hagelvapen 1877-1977" (a very nice, yet scarce, anniversary book with lots of information and pictures of the shotguns made in the Husqvarna factory).

The gun is a model 20 "later model" and according to the serial number it was manufactured 1913. This model was made in a large number (approx 45-50 000) during 1901-1946 and mainly in caliber 12, but also 16 and 20. The barrels were made of Sandvik steel, 75 cm long with 65 mm chambers. This model is probably the most common type made by Husqvarna and it was very popular and affordable (sometimes called "torparbössan")

There is no information about shorter barrels on this, or similar models, but it is possible that someone made a "special order" with shorter barrels.

Unfortunately I can't find any person in the book that had the stamps "AE"

My first shotgun was a model 20 in caliber 16-65 from 1917, that I got from my grandfather. I used it for many years when hunting roedeer and hare.

Thanks for the feedback. Not a hunter myself, but enjoying 'the great outdoors' is definitely a better way to spend your time than in front of some screen.

Hello, and thanks for the welcome, as well as the feedback.

I know about the book, but indeed, it's hard to find.

I already found out about the production year etc. (failed to mention that), but thanks for confirming.
Does 'Sandvik' steel mean anything in particular, except for being fluid steel (of Swedish quality, which seems to mean quite a lot when old shotguns are discussed)? Is it a special alloy?

I suppose this gun was designed purely for black powder? (no, it won't be shot, with any kind of powder, shot or wads, let's call it 'academic' interest :-) . It would be illegal anyway.)
I guess for nitro powder it had to be (re-)proofed, no signs of that though as far as I know.

Concerning the 'special order', could an individual actually contact Husqvarna directly, and request a custom barrel length?

Sorry for all the questions, and thanks again. I wonder if I will ever find out more about the 'AE' stamp, as well as the 6 (or 9) and 8.

I sometimes envy people from Scandinavia, where there's still so much woodland etc. Have fun on your hunts/trips ;-)

You could send an e-mail to husqvarna.museum@husqvarna.se and have a full revue of the weapon as it was delivered. (If it is in there logs)
Please do, and please do come back with feedback, though I personaly feel that a "coach" never was delivered from factory.
It will cost you some Swedish pezetas, but only some, and a paper (diploma style) posted with ALL info! 8)

Yes I considered contacting the museum... Not sure if it's worth the money to him, but I can just send them an email and see where it gets us.

Concerning the barrels' length, I found in a Husqvarna catalogue from 1932 (quite the difference with 1913, I know, but it's what can be found online...) that custom barrel lenghts could be custom ordered in lengths from 68 - 90 cm. This is still shorter, maybe in the time it was made there were other options, or it's actually an entirely custom length as requested by the buyer of the gun... Or, a (big) shop like e.g. Vapendepoten was involved, no idea really but quite interested to find out.

I don't think Sandvik steel means anything particular - Husqvarna just probably choosed to use Swedish Sandvik steel when they started to make their own barrels and actions - probably one of the largest and best steel manufacturer to find in Sweden

I've been told that if the shotgun have steel barrels it's ok to use smokeless powder (however light to normal loads). Damascus barrels were common earlier and they are for black powder only. I used smokeless Eley and rottweil shells in my model 20 for many years without problems.
norbertus skrev: ↑06 jul 2022, 21:52 Concerning the 'special order', could an individual actually contact Husqvarna directly, and request a custom barrel length?
apparently yes - according to the anniversary book, "special orders" were quite common during the late 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.

you might get an answer for the stamps if you ask the museum, I can't find these particular stamps in the book, sorry

Thanks again for the information!

Regarding the black powder vs. nitro thing, I came across Americans (well, online I mean, forums etc.) claiming they shoot smokeless powder in old Husqvarna sxs shotguns "all day", but I wouldn't necessarily trust such information, seeing how some don't care that much about safety and also have a focus on the 'magnum' side of things, which is something that doesn't go well with antique hunting shotguns in my not-so-expert opinion.

When you used the model 20 from your grandfather, did you use nitro? Or were/are black powder shells still for sale? As far as I know, the transition (in general) from black to nitro happened end of the 19th century, I can imagine people wanted to switch to smokeless and its benefits fast. I also read in the beginning, reloaders sometimes put the same amount of smokeless in their shells as they were used to with black powder, resulting in accidents, especially with Lefaucheux actions.

Interesting, those 'special orders'. I also asked the Husqvarna museum for more information about this.

If I ever travel to Sweden, I will definitely pay the museum a visit. I also would like to have one of their chainsaws btw, a really heavy one to make an Alaskan saw mill with, so for rip cutting. Lots of cc's and a blade of 100cm or sth like that :-) . But that's another story.

Hello,

the kind people of the museum mailed back. Unfortunately, it seems like the gun was sawed off anyway, initial measurements were probably wrong (cheap calipers).

They were unable to tell me more than I already knew, except for the fact that the gun was test fired on the 12th of june, 1913.

I wonder why the gun was sawed off, I can imagine it makes it a worse and less efficient gun for hunting (wider pattern). Maybe for some kind of self defense purpose? Or to shoot slugs? Are there 'common' reasons why people would have done this, especially in Sweden, or "is my guess as good as any"?

Rgds.

Probably something happened to the barrels of the shotgun so they sawed off the barrels. Shoot and be happy about a Swedish shotgun.

Kind Regards
