Norma Vulcan and Oryx 9.3s
I apoligize for posting in english, I hope I do not offend
I am loading 232gr Oryx and Vulcan bullets in front of 56 grains of Varget. Accuracy in my R93 Blaser is superb groups tend to be of the ragged hole variety.
My question is last year I harvested a whitetail doe that weighed about 125 pounds she was shot with the Oryx at about 45 meters. Bullet expansion was almost nothing but got the job done anyway. Should I use the Vulcans for this size game and save the Oryx for larger animals?
Will the Vulcans give more positive expansion and are the suitable for game the size of elk, moose or stag?
Should continue on with the oryx bullets and get a few more deer and test them further?

Re: Norma Vulcan and Oryx 9.3s
Are you US-based,
choice of powder would suggest that.
Vulcan bullets are really soft, they will expand very rapidly, some people will consider then to soft and frail other love them for there ability to make deers go DRT.
They will in most rifles shoot well, in a Blaser to, however one varning is in order, angled shots and shots through larger deers shoulders are not to be taken at all with this bullet.
As you are well familiar with Whitetail come in a variety of sizes and that is what will determin choice of bullet.
By the way the vulcan is extremly popular in France, Polen and Germany at driven hunts for deer, boar and other large game due to it´s ability to topple game fast.
Welcome to robsoft and I hope that you are able to comprehend my rather lacking english, any additional questions are most welcome.
Best regards Chris

Re: Norma Vulcan and Oryx 9.3s
The whitetail deer that I hunt will seldom exceed 175#s but due to the dense forrest in my area it is a good idea to get them down quickly but they are also not a difficult animal to put down. I just want positive expansion with an accetable amount of meat damage.
I am US based and from an area where our version of english is often unrecognisable by others that speak english, so bear with me.

Re: Norma Vulcan and Oryx 9.3s
Corjack, that equates to about 79,9 kg in Sweden, as well as the rest of the world to.
Not all that to big of subspecie of the whitetail, in dense forest bullets like NBT, vulcan, Speer hotcore, NAB, will work it´s magic. A 9,3 is a bit of an owerkill however deer it perhaps not all that lurks in those woods, do you guys have bears as well.
I for one will bear with you, as long as you do tell wereabouts you are from, let me guess, southish problably..
I stop with just recommending you to try them out, the bullets that is, btw how is the yote problem were you live/hunt?
Best regards Chris

Re: Norma Vulcan and Oryx 9.3s
I am from the southern part of Missouri we have very few bears and they are not large here is a picture of a large bobcat that I shot with my R93 in a 7x64 and a 175 grain Hornady.
It was raining very hard and I was walking back to camp from my shooting stand when I saw him feeding on a gut pile from a deer I had taken the day before I could barely see him through my Zeisse scope it was raining so hard.

We have nothing in the forrest that will eat you but our women tend to be rather large and extremely mean.

Corjack you are the man, god shot there, lynx the swedish equivalent to a bob cat are restricted for hunting, you guys seems to have a better situation regarding predator hunting.
We have a limited season for them however.
Mississippi you say, seems like I never can remember how many s´s and i´s there are in that word.I have heard rumors about those southern woman, but those I heard were a bit more of the raunchier nature.
I spent a whole year in Alaska as a student, let me tell you up there I had a hard time separating women from bears, but I soon learned to only hit on the ones were the fur came of easily, a bit on the fugly side though.
Best regards Chris

Re: Norma Vulcan and Oryx 9.3s
Hello Corjack. When it comes to whitetail and 9,3 I think any bullet will put it down. Anyway, if you´re looking for a bullet with rellativ fast but controlled expansion I think the Nosler AccuBond 250gr would work nicely.

Re: Norma Vulcan and Oryx 9.3s
I have several boxes of the 250 NBTs that were made before the Accubonds and they would probably be just the ticket and the last time I shot any of them they were very accurate.
How do the Oryx bullets perform expansion wise on game larger than 79 Kg deer?

Re: Norma Vulcan and Oryx 9.3s
I havn´t tested the Oryx myself, but a good friend of mine have shot some elks (european moose, smaller then the american) with the 286gr Oryx, and he was very pleased with the bullet. He shot bouth calfs and fullgrowns with good result. I use a 458WM nowadays for elkhunting, but most of my elks I have been shooting with my 300WM. The reason why I started to use "overkill" for elkhunting was that i started hunting with a dog, so I wanted a slow and heavy bullet, becase I normally shoot from close distanses. For the moment I use A-frame 500gr bullets, and i get a nice small hole right true, and it brings the animals down fast enough.

Re: Norma Vulcan and Oryx 9.3s
Corjack!
I have a bit different experineces about the Vulcan bullet in 9,3 than Husqvarna....... In my opinion the 232 grain Vulcan in 9,3 works really well even on big moose! The Vulcan line of bullets have quite different performance depending on cal. and weight in my opinion
I have (several times) for ex. seen the 180 grain .30 blow up like a varmint bullet on medium sized moose with tracking an follow up shots as a result
The 141 grain 6,5 Vulcan have resulted in similar bad behaviour as the 180 grain in .30.
The 286 grain Oryx 9,3 is a good bullet for Swedish moose but have a tendency to expand quit a a bit if the recistance is tuff. There is few faliures though due to over expantion and poor penetration. I have shot mabye 5-6 moose with the 286 grain Oryx and I liked it. The 232 grain Oryx works well on moose to. I have shot about 10 moose with the 232 grain Oryx and it expanded well like the 286 but never to a extreme degree with bad penetration as a result. A 232 grain 9,3 bullet is quite short, so the problem with big exantion could be a problem if the recistanse bekomes really heavy..... I would turn to a tuffer bullet in my 9,3 if I´m after bears or anything bigger/tuffer than out Swedish moose! For whitetail the 15 gram Vulcan or the 232 grain Oryx would be a good choise in my opinion!
I´ll try to find my box of expanded bullets and take a few fotos and post here later today!

Re: Norma Vulcan and Oryx 9.3s
Corjack!
Here you got a picture of an 232gr oryx taken out of a bull (moose) velocity 2600 ft/s, shoot distance 276 meters.
As you can see it opens up quite alot, even at long distance. If I would have to choose, I would take oryx rather than vulcan every day of the week.
But the best for the game should be Nosler BST, Accubond, these bullets got better BC compared to both oryx and vulcan.

Yea, I notised the fat tires at the shelfe to
Laikamannen!
You can´t be serious about BC in a 9,3x62
If I have a 9,3x62 I select the bullets from perfomance in the game, expantion and stuff like that. If I take a shot at at game close to 300 m I would for sure look for a 300 mag or similar that handles a situation like that a lot better

I shoot deer with my 9,3 with Woodleigh 320 SN RN, it´s easy to use one bullet for all game

The photos were taken in my brothers garage where he works on his race cars. He races sprint cars.
Thank you all for your most kind replies.
I will digest this info and try some different bullets and probably try the oryx bullets again as well.
Thanks

Re: Norma Vulcan and Oryx 9.3s
Here is a picture of 3 232 gr Oryx and 1 232 Vulcan in 9,3. All of them picked from adult moose. The 3rd from left hit the shoulderbone on a medium sized bull and was recovered at the far side under the skin. The Vulcan at the far right was found in a moose cow. All bullets at the pic. is shot in a 9,3x62 v/o aprox 770 m/s.
