Hi,
Not sure this will reach the right group, perhaps I should have tried the fågeljakt forum, however I'm a bit language challenged......
I was wondering if any of the local bird hunting fraternity had tried the newer Berger "Target" or thick jacketed VLDs for winter bird hunting? The older thinner jacketed "hunting" style 95grVLDs shoot beautifully in my new 6br and should make a good fox and possibly roe load. I was thinking that the thicker variant might work well for black grouse and caper, even though they are hollow points. Given that the 2 bullets are supposedly ballistically identical this should mean that I would be able to use both kinds with the same loads and same settings on my ballistic turret and cover all my small game hunting with an elegantly simple solution...... No? Sounds good on paper.....
If anyone has tried the VLDs on small game - either kind - I would be interested to hear. I will given them a try regardless butother folks experience always helps.
I wouldn´t support the old 6 mm VLDs from Berger on birds but the new VLD with thicker jackets mabye would be a great bullet! I stick to Hornady 80 gr FMJ and Lapua Scenar 90 gr HPBT in my BR for birds.
At the roedeers I like a hunting bullet that I can trust to expand and not go thru like a FMJ or blow up like match bullets tend to do every now and then on roedeers......
Do you live here in Sweden or are you planning a hunting trip?

Hi Stefan,
Thanks for that. I live in Vasterbotten, these days....... I have used the 80gr Hornadys in my 243Win and have loaded a few for the BR but not tried them yet. They certainly take birds nicely. But I was never happy with the 80gr FMJs in the 243, I could never get them to group any better than 1MOA consistently, not even in truth - though I've seen others do very well with them in other rifles. The Bergers are easily sub .5MOA in the BR with out any serious load development.
How are the 90gr Scenars? Do they open up much? I have tried these in the BR and they also shoot beautifully. Not as tight as the Bergers but close and maybe that is just that the bbl is new and I not really shot it a lot.
I will give the "thick" Bergers a try and see what they do. Worth a bird or 2 to test.
The lighter Bergers seem to either great or garbage for game, depending on the persons point of view. I've not tried them on anything but paper. Would be a nice solution if they did not blow up. Gotta get a roe in my sights first I guess.
If you live here in in Västerbotten you might consider to attend a local benchrest match outside Umeå 23/8 and give your 6 BR a workout! It´s the Brattvall hunting club open club championship and there will be a sporter class your BR rifle should fit into. It´s a match in a relaxed mode and everybody have a good time! it´s a 5x5 shot for group match @ 100 m.
Match-bullets on deer usually result in erratic results Use a good softpoint designed for hunting. A 6 BR don´t take a lot of work to shoot good enough with most SP-bullet to be a killer at roedeers!
I have shot about 20 black grouse with the 90 gr scenar but the result have been great! Not a lost bird and minimal damage to the meat.
The new VLD from Berger with thicker jackets is interesting though for the birds! A thing that makes the Scenar interesting is the price and that they are easy to get here in Swe.

Stefan,
I'm a member of Brattvall, or should be I'm sure I paid, but have never actually been there except for my hunting exam. I live fairly close by now so should go out and use it for testing rather than Sävar.
I will try a few more Scenar loads as backup if the Bergers go south on me. The Bergers are easy enough to get, or as easy as the Scenars, I had to wait several weeks to get the Scenars when I ordered them last year. Good consistent bullet though - have you tried the 105gr in the BR?
Perhaps I will stay with the 308Win and 125gr BTs for roes, it shoots as well as the BR and might be a safer bet.
